One thing that is worth mentioning is that there can be a danger of creating SEO problems, using the canonical tag.

I used the canonical tag in my site, and on some pages omitted the second quotation mark, accidently telling google that the correct url was a custom 404 error page! So I had a few well-ranking pages de-indexed, and have my homepage ranking well for some surprising terms. A foolish mistake, that may take a while to fix. I wonder if it is only me who has ever made this mistake...?

i'm still a little bit confuse, for example my site was indexed by google as site.com/index.html instead of site.com so after reading your post if i understand right i should use the Canonical Tag to fix this problem right? Thanks
