- Search Engine Optimization Tip #9: Linking Out to Other Web Sites
This is search engine optimization tip number nine in our continuing series of search engine optimization tips. Each search engine optimization tip is very specific, should not take a long time to fix (or to check to see if you are following the search engine optimization best practices), and will be rather “short and sweet” and directly to the point.

If you have not been following along with all of our search engine optimization tips, you might want to take a look at the previous SEO tips that we have already talked about. In search engine optimization tip number eight, the last tip, we talked about Alt Tags and how you need to make sure that your keywords are in your Alt Tags and that they need to describe specifically what the image is and what someone will see when they look at it. Previously, before that, we talked about the anchor text of internal links. Then, before that, we talked about having keyword in your urls, linking to your home page, the meta keywords tag, the keywords on your web page, the meta description tag, and your web page’s title tag. All of these “search engine optimization tips” are things I look at when analyzing a site or optimizing it for the search engines. Keep in mind, though, that this is only the beginning. There are a lot more search engine optimization tips coming. (more…)

- Search Engine Optimization Tip #7: Anchor Text of Internal Links
Recently I decided to start compiling a series of search engine optimization tips. Each search engine optimization tip will be very specific, should not take a long time to fix (or to check to see if you are following the search engine optimization best practices), and will be rather “short and sweet” and directly to the point.

If you are following along with my search engine optimization tips, I have talked previously about having keyword in your urls, linking to your home page, the meta keywords tag, the keywords on your web page, the meta description tag, and your web page’s title tag. All of these “search engine optimization tips” are things I look at when analyzing a site or optimizing it for the search engines. Keep in mind, though, that this is only the beginning. There are a lot more search engine optimization tips coming.
For search engine optimization tip number seven, I thought I would take a look at the anchor text of your internal links. The anchor text, according to Wikipedia, is “The anchor text or link label is the visible, clickable text in a hyperlink.” Some search engines look very heavily at the anchor text that is used to help them determine what a page is about; and that has an effect on the page’s search engine rankings. - Search Engine Optimization Tip #6: Keywords in your URLs
Recently I decided to start compiling a series of search engine optimization tips. Each search engine optimization tip will be very specific, should not take a long time to fix (or to check to see if you are following the search engine optimization best practices), and will be rather “short and sweet” and directly to the point.

All of these “search engine optimization tips” are things I look at when analyzing a site or optimizing it for the search engines. Keep in mind, though, that this is only the beginning. There are a lot more search engine optimization tips coming.

For this sixth search engine optimization tip, I thought I would talk about your keywords in your URLs. If you look at a URL, can include everything from a subdomain (keyword.domain.com), the actual domain name (keyword.com), a folder or directory (domain.com/keyword/) and the actual page or filename (domain.com/directory/keyword.html). I am going to touch on all of these during this “search engine optimization tip” number six. (more…)

- Search Engine Optimization Tip #5: Linking to your Home Page
Recently I decided to start compiling a series of search engine optimization tips. Each search engine optimization tip will be very specific, should not take a long time to fix (or to check to see if you are following the search engine optimization best practices), and will be rather “short and sweet” and directly to the point.

For this fifth search engine optimization tip, I thought I would talk about linking to your home page. Your web site’s home page is the most important page on your web site. So, it is important to make sure that the search engines know that your most important web page is your home page. This sounds pretty obvious. However, it’s important to make sure that your internal linking is correct.
Too often I see one simple change that can be made that can make a big difference in search engine rankings: change how you are linking to the home page of your site. What is the real home page of your site?
http://www.domain.com/ is your home page, not http://www.domain.com/index.html or http://www.domain.com/default.asp. As far as I am concerned, there is no logical reason to ever link to the actual file; all of your “home” links (in the footer of the pages, the header graphic link, etc.) should point to http://www.domain.com. Why? (more…)
